A High Line Citi Bike Dash in progress: riders on blue Citi Bikes passing a line of people taking selfies on the High Line's concrete path, with birch trees, traffic cones, pigeons and the W 18 St sign, and the race place at the top left.
The High Line, Chelsea. Bikes aren’t allowed up here. Nobody told these racers.

Race up the High Line on a Citi Bike against up to three other riders, or the city locals when nobody’s around. A wipeout costs you about a second, never the race, so it’s never over until 34th St.

How a Race Goes

  • You ride north, from the start line at Gansevoort St to the finish at 34th St. Street signs count off the blocks.
  • Your bike keeps you at cruising speed. You steer and hop.
  • Iced coffee gives you a speed boost (some float in the air after the ramp). Fresh pavement is free speed. The planting beds, the café tables in the Chelsea Market Passage, old rails and selfie lines slow you down.
  • Tourists, the park ranger, loungers, birch trees, planters and the cart make you wipe out for about a second, then you’re off again. Nobody is ever knocked out.
  • Every race is a new ride, built from stretches like the Tour Group (hop the pigeons, steer round the tourists), the Planters (aim for the gap), Old Rail Tracks, Fresh Pavement, the Birch Grove and the Runaway Gelato Cart. A banner tells you what’s coming.
  • Some stretches are always where they really are: the Sundeck at 14th St (weave between the rolling loungers, splash through the water feature), the Chelsea Market Passage (stay in the middle), 10th Ave Square at 17th St (find the gap in the selfie line), and the Spur at 30th St, where somebody left a ramp.
  • The Runaway Gelato Cart. It got away from its owner at the 14th St entrance. It’s still going, and it rings its bell.
  • Falling behind? Ride right behind another rider for a slipstream, and if you’re far behind the leader you get a little tailwind off the Hudson.

The first rider to 34th St wins. Once someone finishes, everyone else has 20 seconds; anyone still riding gets “Didn’t finish” and is placed by how far they got.

Modes

  • Free-for-All: every rider for themselves.
  • Uptown vs Downtown: two teams, points by place, pennants in team colors.
